Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), a key hormone released by the pituitary gland, plays a very important role in a woman’s menstrual cycle. FSH stimulates an egg in the ovary to mature for ovulation. However, women with diminished ovarian reserve (defined as low egg count and/or poor egg quality) require higher and higher levels of FSH to stimulate ovulation. Diminished ovarian reserve is most commonly caused as a result of the natural aging process.
